In push broaching, the broach is pushed through or across the workpiece, meaning the tool is under compressive load throughout the cutting stroke. This allows pull broaches to be manufactured significantly longer, with more teeth and a more gradual, multi-stage cutting progression — resulting in superior surface finish, tighter tolerances, and the ability to cut more complex profiles in a single pass. Pull broaching is the preferred process for demanding internal broaching applications such as involute spline broaches, aerospace components, and any job where precision and surface finish are the top priority.
So which process is better? The honest answer is that neither process is universally superior — each is suited to different applications.
